There are a series of probes taking place in Australia that are aimed at finding links between Chinese business contacts with Australian political leaders. In 2017, an Australian senator was forced to resign following questions that arose over his dealings with a Chinese businessman. Now a New South Wales political figure, Mr Shaoquett Moselmane, has been suspended from his party and is being questioned by police and intelligence agencies.
His leader, Jodi McKay, said media reports that the raids were carried out as allegations of Chinese government interference within Mr Moselmane`s office were “dreadfully concerning.” Relations between Canberra and Beijing have been under stress since Australia called for an investigation of the origins of COVID-19. Beijing has placed economic sanctions on Australia as a result.
