While China builds thousands of kilometers of high speed rail from Shanghai to Beijing and to the western parts of that vast country, California has failed to satisfy the basic needs to secure another $929 million for the continued construction for this project that started in 2010. Should the US hire the Chinese to build its high-speed rail? The Chinese government started only 20 years and has over 29,000 kilometers (18,000 miles) in use – and it grows each year.
The Federal Railroad Administration which is part of the US Department of Transportation said that California’s rail authority “repeatedly failed to comply with the the terms of the FY10 agreement and has failed to make reasonable progress on the project. Additionally, California has abandoned its original vision of a high-speed passenger rail service connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles, which was an essential to its applications for FRA grant funding.” This article was sourced from CNBC in an article written by Jeff Daniels.
The project was forecast to cost $10 billion and cost overruns have now taken the estimate to $70 billion dollars and projections are now saying the project will be 20 years over schedule and could cost as much as $100 billion. The governor of California says that the Trump administration pulling funding is an attack on clear air, immigrants and on countless other areas.
More than $6 billion has already been spent on the project with 119 miles partially built. President Trump asked the state to return $3.5 billion of federal funds, but Governor Gavin Newsom has refused and said he will fight Washington on court.
