Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono called a press conference and stated that there is a need to keep an eye on China and its moves in Asia. Explaining his decision two days ago to identify a Chinese vessel that entered Japanese territorial waters – it was clearly a submarine according to minister. Mr Kono discussed several issues, including a cancellation of a US made ballistic missile program called the Aegis Onshore program, with Japan saying it is looking for a more cost effective option and one with preemptive strike capabilities. The Japanese government is now looking at options but it seems that these most recent comments by the Defense Minister, using the word “preemptive” is interesting. At a meeting of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party`s defense committee on Thursday, many lawmakers echoed the preemptive strike idea. Finally, note that with all the challenges facing Japan, the Ministry of Defense announced its Cyber Defense Unit would be increased to 300 people next year. Japan is clearly facing challenges from Beijing, and addressing them.
