Japan has announced that it will allow some stores to open, and its citizens more freedoms to socialize and travel with limits. There was never a full lockdown imposed by Japan as the Japanese people are well prepared for protecting themselves agains the virus. They do in fact have a culture of wearing masks and keeping – they do avoid contact – social distancing under normal conditions. They are a people of rules and codes, so when the leaders appear on TV, giving instructions on wearing masks, they do it. For decades Japanese have worn masks in winter as a way of “protecting the other person” when one has the flu. It has both medical and social value – Japanese social cohesion is the core of success as a society. They reject identity politics and any forced fracturing of society by the press. And keep in mind that the media, more open and free than the US and the UK, will take political leaders to task if necessary but for the most part, work to support their county and nation.
