Last Remaining Paintings Inside Notre Dame, Removed

From the French news services.

The last works of art have been removed from Notre Dame Cathedral and they are being moved and stored in safe places, according to French Culture Minister Franck Riester. All of the paintings were removed by Friday afternoon and the feeling was “very positive” as many of these paintings date back to the 18th century. Four works in the area are considered risky, however. Many of the paintings will be transported across town to the Louvre where they will be inspected and cleaned. They will remain at the Louvre according to the ministry.

Every information site has talked about a human chain created by firefighters and church officials on Monday night, the vast majority of sacred artifacts and valuable items inside the 13th century cathedral were saved. There was even a copper statue of a rooster containing relics that was placed on top of the spire, the one that famously collapsed on live TV, it was found in the ashes and to the disbelief of many in the church, it was only dented but survived.

President Macron was due to meet the United Nations cultural agency and delegates from Paris-based UNESCO which has offered to help Notre Dame in the reconstruction which could take 5 years according to experts. Note that some French journalists and political figures have questioned the quality of the workers on the site which is now thought to have triggered the fire – some of the workers were at a loss on how to take action when the fire started to spread. This is being investigated.
