Modi and the India Elections - Exit Polls

According to exit polls this is a sweep for Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi and the ruling alliance which will likely win a big majority in the India Parliament after a long general election that ended in the final day of voting on Sunday. There was criticism early on in the campaign as Mr Modi was questioned about failing to create jobs and to support weak farm prices.

Modi and his team rallied his Hindu nationalist base and turned the campaign into a fight that took on a tone of national security which was an easy presentation to the people after there were threats about missile launches from Pakistan – his opponents said Modi was soft on the response to Pakistan. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which is led by the PM is projected to win 339 to 365 seats in the 545 member chamber in the lower house. To regain control, he needs 272 seats. The notion of a clear win seems to be strong and this will surely mean that 1. Mr Modi can continue to carry out his reforms and in the short-term 2. the stock indices will rally 250 to 300 points.

There has been some criticism of Mr Modi as some have accused him of stoking fear into the Hindu majority of the potential dangers of Muslims and Pakistan and as he promoted a Hindu-first India. Some have said that that Hindu pride is normal in India and that these are traditional values that should be promoted. Muslims are about 14 percent of the 1.3 billion population in India.
