The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authroised the emergency use of the Ebola drug for very sick patients. However, the drug, although said to be working in some cases, it did not improve survival rates significantly. FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn also also said in a meeting, “It`s the first authorised therapy for Covid-19, so we are really proud to be part of it.” Emergency FDA authorisation is the first step, then formal approval, which requires a higher level of review. One word of caution, the drug Remdesivir does not cure Ebola and is still is in the testing phase, so it is not a tried and tested drug – there are still questions about its effectiveness even for Ebola.
