US Mulls Interim Trade Deal With China: Ahead of Talks

Trump administration officials have discussed the possibility of offering a limited trade agreement with China and adjust the schedule of some of the US tariffs that have been implemented and those coming into effect soon. This would be in exchange for Chinese commitments on agricultural purchases and intellectual property, or IP, according to five people familiar with the current talks.

The top trade advisors of President Trump are now suggesting that there could be some version of the deal between the US and China when two rounds of trade talks are enacted in Washington in the coming weeks. If the next round of tariffs can be avoided, it will be for consumer electronics, such as smartphones and laptop computers.

A deal with China would impact the 2020 elections, in the form of allowing US farmers to expand sales and pull them out of their current recession. It has  been tough for farmers and for selected sectors in the US – the trade is surely having negative impact. It is not clear if Huawei will be part of the deal but the Chinese side is demanding that the US drop all tariffs for talks to continue.
