Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan announced Monday the deployment of about 1,000 more troops to the Middle East in what is said to be a threat from the state of Iran. This piece was sourced from the Japan News by Yomiuri Shimbun. There are concerns from the US and its allies in the Gulf region that Iran has been carrying out sabotage to ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the recent attacks are considered valid.
Some of those who are questioning the authenticity of these attacks are actually Japanese shippers, one who said the attack was not a mine as the US military suggested by a projectile or missile that hit its ship. Iran has been at odds with the US and I the past 24 hours has said that it would soon breach limits on how much enriched uranium it can stockpile under the deal, which a White House National Security Council spokesman said amounted to “nuclear blackmail” the paper reported.
The 2015 deal which Iran and other signatories have maintained caps the Iran stockpile at 300 kilograms of enriched uranium at a low 3.67%. The US has been leaning on Iran and has threatened to drive its oil exports, already falling, down to zero. Also, the US has shown videos of what it says it Iranian military operators, the Revolutionary Guard, being behind the recent attacks in shipping lanes. There is concern of Iran blocking the Strait of Hormuz, as the Republic has threatened to do just that earlier this year.
